Hit and Run

Otherwise known as the time I hit a car. While running.

Yes, I’m serious.

So Saturday my sister and I had 7 miles planned as part of our training for Broad Street. Our long runs are normally done on Kelly Drive but this particular Saturday I suggested we run a of couple miles into the city because I really enjoyed when Chrissey and I did that during the Philly Half training.

So we started off and looped around the back and side of the art museum. There is a small half circle on the side of the museum that cars will pull into if they need to turn around. There is a stop light and everything, so it’s legit. Lindsey and I had crossed over the first part of the circle and were standing in the little island part waiting for our turn to go. There was a white SUV coming straight towards us but she had her turn signal on. That should have been my first warning. Let me note that when I run I tend to get in the zone so my usual sensibility may have been slightly lowered. OK back to the story…

Lindsey was on my left and the car decided it did not want to turn like it was SIGNALING and kept coming straight. It passed by Lindsey and I saw Lindsey start to run forward. Now I’m no scientific genius or anything but experience has told me that by the time I registered Lindsey moving forward the car would have then passed by me and I could begin running again. Well in all of my excitement to get moving I failed to notice that the white SUV had slowed down considerably and instead of being far to my right it was RIGHT in front of me.

Steph beginning an excited run+white SUV smack in front of her = BAM

The sound of me making contact with the SUV was so loud my sister stopped and gasped, thinking I must have broken every bone in my left arm. It was crazy because I hit the car and kind of skidded down the side of it  but managed to stay upright! At first I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry from embarrassment. It had to have been a sight to see. I mean who actually RUN INTO A MOVING CAR?!?!  This girl.

All laughing aside though, it did  hurt and I have some scrapes on my arm as well as some mild soreness. But lets be honest, it is really funny. 🙂 We ended up having a good run though and finished all 7 miles in 69 minutes.

So moving on to tastier things…

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a weakness for tortilla chips. They definitely top the list of favorite snack foods, especially with salsa or say, queso dip. 🙂 So when Foodbuzz contacted me asking if I would like to try Tostitos new Artisan Recipes, of COURSE I said I wanted to be considered! Well lucky me because look what was waiting on my doorstep as I walked in the house after work!

They come in two flavors, Fire Roasted Chipotle and Roasted Garlic and Black Bean. I immediately ripped open the Chipotle flavor because who said tortilla chips were bad pre-run fuel?!

The chips are definitely flavorful, although I was hoping for more of a smokey Chipotle flavor. That being said, they were tasty! A bit thicker than normal tortilla chips but packed with flavor-I definitely licked my fingers clean!

I haven’t tried the Roasted Garlic and Black Bean yet; I want to save them for the weekend!

I hope everyone got their Mondays started off right! Anyone out  there have a funny/embarrassing exercise story like mine?!

I received Tostitos Artisan Recipes Flavored Tortilla Chips as part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker Program. Thanks Foodbuzz and Tostitos!

Good things to come

Wow it sure has been awhile since I posted!

The next couple months are going to be busy!! I am in the tail end of 1/2 marathon training (less than a week to go!!), then there is Thanksgiving, my birthday and getting ready for my trip to San Diego!!! Yup-I’m going to San Diego the first week in December! Top it all off with a handful of holiday parties, shopping and Christmas and I have a feeling the next couple months are going to fly by!

I would love to hear from you all about things to do/see/eat while I am in San Diego. Exactly three years ago I was in San Diego for a one day trip with my friend Jessica on our way home from a visit to Palm Springs. We were able to see the zoo but I would really love to explore the city more!

(I’ll be staying here!!)

Before I go – awhile back I received a very generous sampling of Illy Issimo’s line of canned espresso drinks as part of Foodbuzz’s Tastemaker Program. I was feeling generous and after sampling one on a recent drive down to DC I brought the rest to share with my co-workers at the restaurant I work at part-time. They were all very happy to try a new-to-them product!

Although I am partial to a nice, tall iced coffee for Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, I did like how easy it was to just grab one from the fridge and go!

Well, that’s all I’ve got for now. I hope everyone has a great rest of their week!!

Spamps Sushi Night

On Tuesday night I went out with my roommate Stephanie and a couple friends to  celebrate Stephanie’s birthday.

We decided to try out Spamps’ Tuesday night “Buy One  Roll Get One Free” deal.

We were also pleasantly surprised to learn that they had $5 glasses of wine as well – score!!

We decided since the sushi rolls were BOGO to choose some of their specialty rolls we might not normally get since some were almost $20! I don’t remember the names of all four rolls but they were all delicious!!

After devouring our rolls the four of us decided to order a couple more rolls to share. We were pretty let down when we found out the sushi bar had run out of rice!! I took that as a good sign, meaning everyone loves their sushi.

To make up for it our server brought out dessert-on the house. It was the perfect birthday treat – it was rich and chocolaty and just plain awesome.

We ended up having a great time! We got a little goofy and took some fun pictures but it was just what I needed.

If you are ever in Conshohocken, definitely stop by Spamps for their Tuesday night sushi special. Definitely worth it!

Happy Birthday Roomie!

Question: What is your favorite sushi roll?

My current favorite is actually a vegetarian roll with mango and avocado in it from Whole Foods!

Sunflowers and Ravioli

Hey Hey!

Is it just me or do Mondays seem to go fairly quickly? Call me crazy but I think they do. Anyways, my Monday was accompanied by a headache which was lovely–I think it might be allergies that are making me feel kind of cruddy.

Before I get into the random title of this post, I wanted to give an update on my Summer TO DO’s. I have to say I haven’t been doing too well, but vow to cross off at least a couple more in the next month!

Stephanie’s Summer TO DO’s:

  • visit the Philadelphia Zoo
  • take a tour of Troeg’s brewery in Harrisburg
  • go on the Philadelphia Ride the Ducks tour not gonna happen after this:
  • have a sunset HH on the beach – DONE!
  • tube down the Brandywine River
  • Phind the Phanatic Scavenger Hunt
  • plan an all day bike trip at VF National Park
  • Center City Sips! – DONE!
  • make ice cream and fro-yo at  home
  • get my mom to drink a smoothie with spinach in it
  • have Sunday brunch in the city
  • get a puppy (long shot but I had to slip it in there!!!)
  • make pasta sauce from my home-grown tomatoes!
  • go to the Bashful Banana Cafe for some Banana Soft Serve – DONE!

Now about those sunflowers…Remember this picture from this post awhile back?

I went back to the same restaurant where that picture was taken a couple weekends ago and look what it had become!

It got so big!! PS-do you like my dress? I kind of love it-I got it from a surf shop last summer and it’s such a comfy dress for hanging out down the shore.

Now onto the Ravioli’s–Agnolotti actually! The awesome folks over at Buitoni provided me with a coupon to try one of their Riserva pastas as part of the Foodbuzz Tastemakers Program. I was immediately attracted to the Wild Mushroom Angliotti because I love “mushies” so much. Paired with some zucchini and salad, this was a very simple meal to put together.

We decided to go with a mushroom marinara sauce on top of the pasta which was a good choice. They were extremely tasty-cheesy with that meaty mushroom flavor I love. A couple bites did seem kind of salty but I wasn’t complaining-I ate them slowly because I didn’t want them to be gone!

The salad was very simple and had my favorite summer salad topping-FRUIT!  I love it all; apples, peaches, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries. You name it I’ll eat it on a salad. For this salad I tossed some mixed greens with EVOO, peaches and a few dashes of garlic and pepper. YUM.

It was an awesome meal and left me totally satisfied, which says a lot because I usually crave something sweet after dinner. I have the peach to thank for that 🙂 .

Before I go, I wanted to share this quote I read recently and really enjoyed:

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

-Maya Angelou

And on that note, back to work!

Camelbak Charm

This past Sunday I got to use my new Camelbak for the very first time.

I had been wanting one for a long time and decided with both the bike ride and half marathon training taking over the next 4 months I needed something to make sure I stayed hydrated at all times.

After doing some research online I decided on the Camelbak-Charm style.  It seemed to be the style most people recommended for running if you don’t like a lot of weight on your back (this one only weighs 3.5 pounds filled). Plus it holds enough water for a 1.5 hour bike ride. After filling it up and throwing it on my back I was ready to go!

My sister and I set out on a 3.3 mile run into town at noon – and it was close to 90 degrees outside. I will be honest, we definitely walked some, mostly because we are both trying to get our running fitness back. We did run up almost all the hills though-and there were quite a few!

The camelbak was perfect for this run. It helped that I was able to take small sips of water throughout the whole run, as opposed to gulping a water at a water station or water fountain. I think that alone helped me keep my energy up in such hot conditions. I don’t like the feeling of water sloshing around in my stomach, and it give me cramps.

My sister and I would get really excited every time we saw this:

SHADE! The road we ran on was very pretty which made the run a bit easier. I get discouraged sometimes running on the same trail all the time.  A change of scenery was nice.

I had finished almost my whole Camelbak by the time we made it to town and I had only one other thing on my mind.

Iced coffee – actually that’s a lie. This is a non-fat SF Iced Vanilla Latte. A fun Sunday treat after such a HOT run.

All in all I am VERY happy with my Camelbak Charm. It fits perfectly, didn’t bounce as I ran (which was a big concern for me) and didn’t rub. My only complaint is that I wish the extra pocket it has to store things like keys, camera, etc. was a little bit bigger. Other than that I am one happy girl!

Q- If you have a Camelbak, do you wear it year-round?
